Stocks slumped despite an unexpected jump in consumer confidence, and amid a slew of big earnings releases, a day after the Dow reached new highs.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 30 points after coming within 20 points of 12,000 on Monday, hitting a new two-and-a-half year high.
